How these two meet
Fire and water: the one who moves first meets the one who feels first.
Fire moves before it has finished deciding. The reach arrives ahead of the reasoning: the hand already crossing the table, the sentence out of the mouth while some slower part of you is still catching up to it. Water runs just as fast in the other direction, taking the whole thing in at once, low and wordless, somewhere under the ribs, then holding while the feeling finds edges it can be said with.
Neither of you can do lukewarm. Fire has never managed to perform an indifference it does not feel; the face gives it away before the mouth does. Water has never managed to care a little. Two people at full volume from the first week means the intensity is never the thing being negotiated between you. Only its tempo is.
On one side the impulse to speak arrives before the sentence has assembled itself. On the other, the breath goes shallow and holds, because what is being felt is not sayable yet. To fire that held breath registers as a door closing. To water the fast words register as being handled rather than understood. Neither of you is withholding. The same intensity is running on two different clocks.
Because you both go all the way in, you can mistake intensity for agreement, and spend a long season assuming you want the same thing because you want it with the same force.
Where are you reading the other one’s tempo as their answer?
For fire, the work is letting a silence stay a silence. Not every pause is a refusal, and the pull to fill it with more warmth, faster, is the reach arriving early again in a different costume.
For water, the work is letting a question be only a question. Fire asks because it is already moving toward you, not because it wants the answer filed by morning.
Heat and depth are not opposites. They are two ways of refusing to be casual.
What is the other one waiting to finish saying?
