Fire and Earth Compatibility

Fire and earth: one says it, the other waits to see it.

Saying it is not the easy part for fire. The words cost something to get out, and the heat behind them is the evidence. Earth shows it instead, quietly, on a schedule nobody announced, and holds that a thing said is not yet a thing done. Both of you are telling the truth in the only language that has ever felt true to you.

There is a particular unclenching in fire when the ground under it holds without being tended, and a particular flush in earth when the wanting is said out loud instead of assumed. Each of you supplies the half the other cannot manufacture alone.

Fire declares, then watches a face for a matching brightness that does not arrive, because earth has already gone quiet doing the arithmetic of what would need to be true for this to work. The jaw sets a little. To fire that stillness reads as doubt. To earth the large sentence arrives with nothing underneath it yet, and the body waits for weight.

Left alone this hardens into roles. Fire becomes the one who feels, earth becomes the one who provides, and each of you privately suspects you are carrying the part the other one refuses to.

Which kind of proof do you refuse to accept, even when it is offered?

Fire is not being extravagant when it speaks. Unspoken love feels, to fire, like love that has not happened yet.

Earth is not withholding when it waits. A promise ahead of an action feels, to earth, like being asked to stand on something that has not been built.

Fire spends itself saying it. Earth spends itself doing it.
