How these two meet

Earth and air: one trusts what has been done, the other what can be named.

Air arrives at something by talking it into shape. The idea is not a preliminary to the real work; saying it clearly is most of what makes it true. Earth arrives by making it, and holds a thing unproven until it has survived a week of ordinary Tuesdays.

Air says out loud the thing earth has been doing for months, and earth quietly does the thing air said last Tuesday, and each is briefly startled that the other was paying that kind of attention. Neither has to ask for the translation; it runs in both directions on its own.

Air names where this is going, out loud, early, because naming is how air gets close. Something in earth goes careful at that, a claim being made on a future nobody has built. So earth goes quiet and gets on with it, and air reads the quiet as absence and talks more to fill it, which makes earth quieter.

Over time each of you can feel like the only adult present. One carries the meaning, the other carries the weight, and both of you suspect the other has the easier job.

Do you believe a thing more when it has been said, or when it has been survived?

Naming is not overpromising. For air, saying it aloud is a commitment made in the only place commitments feel binding.

Silence while working is not the absence of an answer. It is the answer being made, in the only workshop earth trusts.

A promise means something to both of you.

Which of you is further along in believing this?
