The times are exact instants, not days, because a moon that turns full at 01:29 UTC has already turned full the evening before for most of the Americas, and rounding that to a date quietly makes the page wrong for half its readers.

Each entry links to what that phase means in that sign. The dates come from Swiss Ephemeris, the same calculation professional astrologers use, and nothing here is estimated.

Eclipses

An eclipse is a full or new moon that lands close enough to the lunar nodes for the shadow to reach. They come in pairs, roughly twice a year, and they tend to move things that were already loose.

How many full moons are there this year?

It depends on the year. A lunar cycle is about 29.5 days, so twelve of them fall a few days short of a calendar year and a thirteenth full moon lands in some years but not others. The count for this year is at the top of this page.

Why are the times given in UTC?

Because a full moon is one instant for the whole planet, not one per country. Naming the zone is what makes the time checkable: you can convert it to your own clock and it will match any ephemeris. A page that printed local times would have to pick someone else’s local.

What is the difference between a lunar and a solar eclipse?

A lunar eclipse happens at a full moon, when the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon and casts its shadow on her. A solar eclipse happens at a new moon, when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun and casts her shadow on us.

Where do these dates come from?

From Swiss Ephemeris, the calculation library built on the JPL planetary integrations. The instants are found by asking the library directly rather than by approximating, and the eclipse dates are checked against NASA’s catalogue in an automated test.
